Natura Scenarios -- the framework alive, traced system by system

The deep functional vision, made concrete. DESIGN.md is the architecture, SYSTEMS.md the parts, ONTOLOGY.md the content -- this file shows them RUNNING. Each scenario traces a real phenomenon through the actual systems and the actual fields that flow between them, so the coupling stops being a diagram and becomes a story you can implement. Written 2026-08-02 while the vision is whole. Every "-->" is a real ctx.fields.<producer>.<field> read; every step is a real system.step.

The operator named the two poles and the middle: "from the branching of rime on a leaf in a storm to the battle of two moose in a forest to the slow cooling of a sun over billions of years." All three, plus the everyday loops, worked below.

Pole 1 -- Rime on a leaf in a storm (MICRO scale, seconds-minutes)

The smallest thing, and it needs four systems agreeing at a point:

  1. WEATHER steps: a low-pressure front arrives; its cold air advects in; temp at this cell drops below freezing; humidity is high (near saturation), wind is up. It exposes {temp:-3, humidity:0.9, wind, cloud:1} at (x,y).
  2. VEGETATION has a leaf here (biomass>0); its surface, exposed to the sky, radiatively cools to slightly BELOW the already-freezing air -- the coldest surface around. It exposes {leafTemp:-5}.
  3. FROST (micro system) wakes where weather.temp < 0 AND weather.humidity is high AND a cold surface (vegetation.leafTemp) exists. Water vapour DEPOSITS directly to ice on the leaf (skips liquid) -- and because deposition is diffusion-limited, it BRANCHES: a DLA / dielectric-breakdown walk grows ice fingers toward the incoming vapour gradient. wind biases the growth direction.
  4. The result -- feathered rime spreading across the leaf, its branching angle set by how supersaturated the air is (the same eta parameter as How Carefully It Listens) -- is EMERGENT from the coupling, not drawn.

Fields that flowed: WEATHER.temp/humidity/wind --> FROST; VEGETATION.leafTemp --> FROST. Build on: the dielectric/DLA craft, wrapped as a Natura micro system that only activates under the right weather. The wonder: the same storm system that dropped rain on a mountain 50 km away is, at millimetre scale, drawing ferns of ice on one leaf -- one framework, both.

Pole 2 -- The battle of two moose in a forest (ECOLOGICAL, a rutting season)

Life, mind, and society meeting over a season:

  1. TIME steps: season reaches autumn; dayLength shortens. This is the RUT trigger.
  2. LIFE-CYCLE: two male moose are stage:adult, well-fed (energy high from a summer of VEGETATION grazing). Autumn + adult + fed flips an internal rutting flag.
  3. ECOSYSTEM places them in the same territory (a resource-rich patch of VEGETATION near water from OCEAN); a receptive female is present. Two rutting males + one female + shared territory = a CONTEST.
  4. MIND (even a thin one): each male perceives the other, displays (antler size ~ age+energy), and either backs down (fear > aggression) or engages. If both engage:
  5. The clash resolves on energy x health x age + a little seeded noise -> a winner. The loser takes health damage (-> LIFE-CYCLE: wounded, may ail), retreats (ECOSYSTEM: territory ceded). The winner MATES (INTERACTION: procreating -> a calf enters LIFE-CYCLE next spring).
  6. Both males spent energy on the fight -> LIFE-CYCLE: they enter winter leaner, more likely to starve if VEGETATION is poor and WEATHER is harsh. The fight has a cost that ripples into survival.

Fields that flowed: TIME.season --> LIFE-CYCLE (rut); VEGETATION.food --> LIFE-CYCLE (energy); ECOSYSTEM (co-location, mate) <--> LIFE-CYCLE (stage, energy) <--> MIND (aggression). Build on: boids (the herd), a life-cycle state machine, Lotka-Volterra for the population the calves feed. The battle is not scripted -- it is what happens when the season, two fed adults, and a contested resource coincide.

Pole 3 -- The slow cooling of a sun over billions of years (COSMIC -> everything)

The deep-time cascade -- one system at the top rewrites the whole world beneath it:

  1. STELLAR steps at Gyr cadence (the clock's eons()): the star burns hydrogen on the MAIN SEQUENCE (~stable luminosity for ~10 Gyr), then the core contracts and it swells to a RED GIANT (luminosity soars ~1000x, radius engulfs inner orbits), sheds its shell, and settles to a WHITE DWARF that COOLS over further Gyr toward dark. It exposes luminosity(t) -- a curve, not a constant.
  2. ORBITS: the habitable zone (where insolation allows liquid water) MOVES outward as luminosity rises. A planet fixed in its orbit passes through: too cold -> temperate -> too hot -> scorched; then, as the white dwarf cools, a brief far-out temperate window again, then cold forever.
  3. WEATHER/CLIMATE: insolation sets the planet's base temp. Early: frozen (ice weather). The main sequence: temperate (the world we simulated -- rain, rivers, rain-shadows). Red giant: oceans boil off (OCEAN evaporates, WEATHER becomes a steam/CO2 hell), then nothing.
  4. BIOME + VEGETATION + LIFE: track the climate. Frozen -> tundra/ice, sparse life. Temperate -> forests advance, ecosystems flourish (the moose, the birds, the whole living surface). Hot -> deserts creep, biomes collapse, life retreats to poles then fails (LIFE-CYCLE: mass dying, decomposing).
  5. The ARC of the whole world -- a barren frozen rock, a green living age of a few Gyr, a scorched end -- is DERIVED from one field, stellar.luminosity(t), flowing down the whole scale ladder.

Fields that flowed (all downward): STELLAR.luminosity --> ORBITS.habitableZone + WEATHER.insolation --> climate --> BIOME --> VEGETATION --> LIFE. Build on: a stellar-evolution model + Kepler orbits. The wonder the operator asked for: zoom the same framework out in time and space far enough, and a life- bearing world is a brief warm flicker in a star's long cooling.

The everyday LOOPS (the middle, where a living world actually lives)

A storm rolls in (one afternoon -- the water cycle)

WEATHER spawns a low over the sea --> moist wind drives inland --> hits TERRAIN's windward slope --> orographic uplift --> rain --> OCEAN routes runoff down TERRAIN.flow --> riverFlow rises, a lake fills --> VEGETATION drinks the soilWater and greens --> and evapotranspires, feeding humidity back to WEATHER (the self-watering loop). The lee stays dry: rain-shadow. One low-pressure system, and half the island's water budget for the week is decided by which way it drifted.

A fire season (drought -> fire -> regrowth)

A rainless month: WEATHER moisture falls --> VEGETATION dries (living biomass -> fuel, high & crisp) --> a storm's edge throws lightning (WEATHER event) into the dry fuel --> FIRE ignites --> spreads by fuel x wind x dryness x upslope, a front racing up the valley --> VEGETATION burns to ash + burnScar --> smoke dims WEATHER's insolation locally. Months later, rain returns, ash has enriched the SOIL, and VEGETATION regrows greener than before. The valley remembers the fire in a band of younger trees.

A year turns (the breathing of the world)

TIME.season cycles: spring warms --> VEGETATION grows, LIFE-CYCLE breeds (calves, chicks, seedlings) --> summer, ECOSYSTEM populations peak, the moose fatten --> autumn, the rut, seeds set, birds flock to migrate --> winter, VEGETATION senesces, creatures hibernate/migrate/starve, WEATHER hardens. One turn of the clock's yearPhase, and every living system inhales and exhales with it.

A landscape ages (deep-time erosion -- terrain & weather co-evolving)

TECTONICS raises a mountain range over Myr --> its height forces WEATHER's orographic rain on the windward flank --> that rain drives TERRAIN's hydraulic erosion THERE --> the range lowers and its valleys deepen asymmetrically (wet side carved, dry side preserved) --> which changes where the rain falls --> which changes the erosion. Given long enough, the mountains and their weather sculpt each other into a shape neither would have alone. This is the erosion loop the walk's terrain showed as a still; Natura runs it forward in time.
